    New Sound Theory Vol. 1

    BasicLux

    BY TONY WARE

James and DeAnna Cool, the Atlanta couple behind electro-pop act Madison Park and the compilers of New Sound Theory Vol. 1, named their label BasicLux because they feel music is "one of life's basic luxuries, something everyone needs and that helps define not only the moments of one's life, but also who we are." But listening to NST, it becomes apparent that the acts showcased are more "luxurious" than "basic."

While New Sound Theory is described as music for a "sound lifestyle," the overall vibe is boutique. The elements that comprise the productions on New Sound Theory are classic, yet they come across as perfectly updated. The warm, rolling tones and crisp beats work equally well whether you're looking to chill out or go out.

Chris Brann's nu_jazzy opener, "Between Them," sets the mood perfectly, and his collaborations as Ananda Project make an excellent universal reference. There's a prevalent brooding, soulful sensuality -- especially in tracks by Madison Park vs. Lenny B, Abstract Foundation and Salah Ananse. The artists share groove and grace (though beats do vary), from the solid deep-house/garage of Bleu Screen and Auricle, to Stormchild's two-step, KemeticJust's Brazilian flourish and Puzzle's drum 'n' bass. Locals Kai Alce, Bryan Ogden and Michael Scott also make excellent contributions.

Like any good boutique, NST offers classy and fresh mixed with a little classic.

KemeticJust, Kai Alce, Lenny B, Nav and Jeff Demetriou perform at Halo Wed., Nov. 6, for the New Sound Theory release party.
