There’s a sound of a cool
night, a hot club, the perfect martini being held by the
most beautiful girl you’ve ever seen. It’s the sound of
a night out with your closest friends, stumbling through
streets lit by lamps and equally bright stars. It’s a
chilled, deep sound, and right now that sound is
emanating from Atlanta-based independant label BasicLux
records’
New Sound Theory Volume 2 .
Differing from the first release,
New Sound
Theory 2 takes an international look at the coolness
of lounge. Featuring the beautifully lush, flowing
sounds of Atlanta Deep House staple Chris Brann (who, as
Ananda Project, released an almost impossibly pretty LP
earlier this year) and vocalist Heather Johnson on “Slo
Motion”, as well as BasicLux’s own Madison Park on one
of the album’s most standout tracks, the surprisingly
uptempo and floor-ready “You Take Me Places”, the tracks
on
New Sound Theory Volume 2 hold a cohesive flow
that takes the album slowly through the Two-step
influenced “Outta My Mind” by Biter MC, the imploring
groove of “Rescue Me” by Roxxy (feature perhaps the most
telling lyrics of any Deep House track ever: “I want
your love, but on my terms, please”), and the Latin hint
of Lenny B’s “La Guitara”. The surprisingly earnest,
emotional vocals on Hook The Captain’s “I’ll Follow You”
caught this listener, bred on insincere Deep House,
completely off-guard. The track must be heard to be
believed.
New Sound Theory Volume 2
presents an impressive collection of amazingly pretty,
lushly groovy Lounge tracks from an independent label
that’s quickly establishing itself at the forefront of
the sound. Run by Atlanta residents James and Deanna
Cool, whose musical project Madison Park makes a
stunning appearance on both
New Sound Theory
volumes, as well as readying the release of a
full-length LP, BasicLux taken a stand against the
boring, rote name Deep House/Lounge has gained in
certain Dance Music circles by presenting tracks both
impressingly emotional (see aforementioned offerings
here by Madison Park, Hook The Captain, and Roxxy) and
impossibly dancefloor-ready (“Outta My Mind” will make
you move regardless how hard you fight it). Equally
impressive as car music for a sunny day or on your way
to a night out, BasicLux has brought a collection of
music to soundtrack moments of life.
